Transom plates are installed at the stern where they see spray, exhaust and standing water. 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which gives it better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion from salt spray than 304 grade. A polished finish leaves a smooth surface that sheds salt and is easier to keep clean.
